Minor Requirements

The Ancient Mediterranean Studies minors have changed! If you began your studies at 91制片厂Pro University prior to fall 2024, your minor requirements are outlined on the bottom half of this page, whereas the new minors will be listed below. Minor in Ancient Mediterranean Studies

Students interested in the minor in Ancient Mediterranean Studies must complete the following requirements (6 courses in total):

  • One Foundations in Ancient Mediterranean Studies Course (4 credits)
  • Five courses (20 credits), of which at least three must be listed under Ancient Mediterranean Studies (AMS), Greek (GRK) or Latin (LAT), with the remainder to be chosen from archaeology, ancient history, ancient philosophy, ancient art, ancient literature or other courses in Ancient Mediterranean Studies as approved by the Undergraduate Director.
    Note: No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses may be counted toward the minor.
    Three courses must be at the 300-level or above.
    Teaching practica (e.g., AMS391, GRK391, LAT391) shall not count toward the minor.

Minor in Mediterranean Archaeology

Students interested in the minor in Mediterranean Archaeology must complete the following requirements (6 courses in total).

  • At the 100-level, either 鈥淢editerranean Myths, Then & Now鈥 (AMS180M) or 鈥淒aily Life in Greece and Rome鈥 (AMS105) or, in exceptional cases, an equivalent course.
  • One course at the 200-level (choosing from e.g., Materials Matter (AMS 281M),  Art in the Ancient Greek World (AMS 280A),  Ancient Cities (AMS 280C),  Rome: Archaeology of Empire (AMS 281Y),  The Archaic Mediterranean (AMS283), Roman Art (AMS283V)).
  • Three courses at the 300-level (choosing from e.g., Ancient Roman Economy (AMS380E), The Etruscans (AMS381F), Archaeological Ethics (AMS383Z),  Rome鈥檚 Augustan Rebirth (AMS381X), Archaeology of Athens (AMS380A), Hellenistic and Roman sculpture (AMS380H),  Trojan War (AMS381T), Urbanism in Antiquity (AMS380U), Ancient Italy in Context (AMS480S)).
  • One elective course, listed under Ancient Mediterranean Studies (AMS) or one chosen from cognate subjects, e.g., Anthropology, Environmental Studies, Geography, Geology, and History, or one field study or internship course, these last two by advisement of the Undergraduate Director.
    For any one course lacking the 鈥淎MS鈥 prefix, students must seek permission from the Undergraduate Director. 
  • Note: No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses may be counted toward the minor.
  • Three courses must be at the 300-level or above.
  • Teaching practica (e.g., AMS391, GRK391, LAT391) shall not count toward the minor. 

Minor in Ancient Greek

  • One Foundations in Ancient Mediterranean Studies course (4 credits)
  • Five courses (20 credits) in ancient Greek
    Note: No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses may be counted toward the minor.
    Three courses must be at the 300-level or above.
    Teaching practica (e.g., AMS391, GRK391, LAT391) shall not count toward the minor.

Minor in Latin

Students interested in the minor in Latin must complete the following requirements (6 courses in total):

  • One Foundations in Ancient Mediterranean Studies Course (4 credits)
  • Five courses (20 credits) in Latin
    Note:  No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses may be counted toward the minor.
    Three courses must be at the 300-level or above.
    Teaching practica (e.g., AMS391, GRK391, LAT391) shall not count toward the minor.

Minor requirements for Ancient Mediterranean Studies minors (for those who started before fall 2024):

Minor in Classical Civilization 

Six courses (24 credits), of which at least three must be listed under Classics (CLAS), Greek (GRK) or Latin (LAT), with the remainder to be chosen from ancient archaeology, ancient history, ancient philosophy, ancient art, ancient literature or other courses in classical civilization approved by the Undergraduate Director. No more than two introductory-level (100-level) courses may be counted toward the minor, and two courses must be 300-level or above.

Minor in Ancient Greek

Any six courses (24 credits) in ancient Greek.

Minor in Latin

Any six courses (24 credits) in Latin.
